The Guesthouse

You’ll love the Aveiro Arts House, a historic residence with a notable tradition in Arts and Culture, combining modern amenities and vintage charm.

A house with history

Former home of the beloved ceramist, writer, painter and filmmaker Vasco Branco (1919-2014), our unique family house is located in the very heart of Aveiro.

Vintage charm

Designed in the late fifties by Victor Palla, the charismatic building faces a small garden, which lies between our house and the Museum of Aveiro: you get all the comfort of staying in the centre of town, while enjoying the serenity of a peaceful street.

Sunny, spacious areas

There are four sunny, spacious and pleasant private rooms available across the stylish Guesthouse floor. Each room is dedicated to one of the several arts cultivated by Vasco Branco or to a distinct art process related to his practice.

Besides your own room, on each floor you have access to two complete shared bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable living room and a lovely sunroom/balcony.

Looking for something slightly more exclusive? Book the whole Guesthouse or the exquisite Arts Lounge just for yourselves!

In the heart of Aveiro

Everything worth visiting is at walking distance: Aveiro’s famous canals, the Municipal Theatre, Vasco Branco’s public works, the several museums or the University; and Aveiro’s stunning beaches are just fifteen minutes away by car. We’ve prepared a guide with directions to all our favourite places to visit, eat and shop in and around Aveiro. Whenever possible, we’ll be thrilled to show you around ourselves.

Our rooms & apartments

An authentic experience

The building resembles a house-museum, filled with unique stories that bring out the artistic and cultural contexts of Aveiro and Portugal in the 20th Century. Besides the guesthouse, it also features an arts residency, a gallery-shop, a library and a cinema auditorium, which you can visit on demand. If you are lucky to coincide, you are very welcome to attend one of the exclusive events that we occasionally host, such as intimate concerts, poetry readings or movie screenings.

A comfortable, clean, bright, quiet, modern space. Creatively designed with care and imagination in an homage to Hugo’s grandfather, who seems to have been a true renaissance man. The hosts are very warm and interesting, and we enjoyed sharing stories across a range of topics. If you have an interest in art, and want to see how these people are creating a community based art space, you’ll love your stay here.

I’d been travelling around Portugal and my partner was coming out to meet me for a week, so i wanted to take him somewhere special. But I didn’t know just how special this place was. Aveiro is beautiful, but VIC is a real treasure. The restored home of Vasco Branco, a filmmaker, potter, painter and writer of Aveiro, is the passionate project of Hugo and his friends, and you can really feel that warmth and energy. Each bedroom and space is decorated with the artists’s work, which was inspiring, as well as a calm and cosy space to spend time in. It felt more like staying with friends than Airbnb. Both truly grateful to Hugo and everyone at VIC for such an amazing week 🙂

Thanks to Hugo, Aveiro became one of our “the best of” in Portugal. The history of the house, the artworks and furniture, but most of all the people that created this place are so much worth knowing. Hugo’s place is in a perfect location too: in a city centre, but on a calm street overlooking a little green square. Great!

Very cool project of people who wanted to keep their family’s heritage alive. Wonderful house with an open atmosphere and a very dedicated tour through all the rooms. A great place for people who are interested in all kinds of arts. Plus, the house is situated in the city center and Hugo has a lot of recommendations concerning what to do. He even provided us with their own map with places to visit.

Amazing hosts, incredibly friendly, very attentive, well organised, multilingual. You just feel that what they are doing is what they love. They were super fast in replying and, during my stay, they were available at any time. The house is beautiful and artistic, and the rooms are cosy, bright and very clean. I slept very well during my 4 days trip since the house is located in a very quiet, yet central street. The kitchen and the bathrooms are also very clean. All in all, you have really everything you need and I had a really, really nice stay, so thank you again!

Abigail

My friend and I had a great stay at Hugo’s house. The room was spacious and beautifully furnished. Everything was exceptionally clean. The communication was very easy and Hugo provided us upfront with general tips and a map of where to park for free. The house is centrally located, but in a very quiet street. And we loved the breakfast recommendation! We would definitively return 🙂

Judith

The room was very spacious. The entire house is full of amazing artwork by the original owner who is Hugo’s grandfather. Honestly, the house itself is like a mini-museum on its own. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Aveiro. 10/10!

It’s worth going to Aveiro simply to visit the Aveiro Arts House. They are the most incredible hosts with an abundance of information about the area. They have gone above and beyond in every aspect. The pride and enthusiasm that they have for the house, having lovingly restored it to its no doubt former glory, is infectious and the perfect tribute to Hugo’s family, particularly his grandfather. Do not miss the basement cinema, and all the stories behind it. I feel more like a friend than an Airbnb guest now, and I’m just sorry I couldn’t stay longer.
